In spite of the progress Ghana has made in improving access to education for all, there are still challenges preventing thousands of children from going to school and learning.
The school environment is often not conducive to learning. Classes are overcrowded, water and sanitation facilities are inadequate, and trained teachers and school books are in short supply. Children in rural areas face even more challenges.
Due to fishing and farming, many children in rural Ghana attend school only three days a week. Classrooms are empty on Wednesdays and Fridays when kids help their families. Nearly 623,500 children of primary school age are still not enrolled.
Existing school infrastructure is often limited. Many children study in makeshift spaces with no walls, no desks, and no shelter from rain. Some walk miles to reach any school.
With better schools and support, children have a stronger chance to stay in education and leave poverty. Funding goes to classrooms, teachers, and materials.
